Selecting the Best Necklace for Her Lifestyle and Taste
Picking out the best necklace is one of the easier jewelry-selecting tasks you’ll run across, as long as you stay simple. Whether it’s a chain, pendant, or gemstone strand, it’s jewelry she can wear almost every day without much thought about whether it matches or not.
That doesn’t mean you can skip your homework though. There are still decisions that have to be made, and the only way to make them accurately is to know what she likes. Look through her jewelry box and take note of the metal colors and materials, types of stones, and overall chunkiness or daintiness of the collection. That’s a great start. The slightly harder part will be choosing the right length, so we’ll talk about that now.
Necklaces can be purchased in almost any length. If you want to buy a tight-fitting choker necklace, you need to be pretty sure of her neck size. A choker should fit snugly around the base of the neck but not droop. A standard chain or pendant should hang about 2-3″ below the base of her neck so it isn’t covered up by her blouse. If she wears a lot of sweaters or button-up blouses, a longer chain is appropriate, since it will be worn outside the clothing. Figuring out those perfect lengths for your girl will be the hardest part of your job.
If you want to get her a simple chain, after the type and color of the metal, all that’s left is the chain link design. If she prefers more delicate jewelry, box, Singapore, carded, woven link, and wheat link are great choices for a chain. If she prefers bolder jewelry, the best necklaces to buy are double rolo, panther link, serpentine, herringbone, and anchor chain.
Pendant necklaces are very similar to chain necklaces, but give you a few more options. You can buy a necklace that has the pendant strung though it, or hanging so it can be worn on a chain. The best necklace for a younger lady may be a pendant necklace made of leather or woven rope with a modern pendant design. Pendants can be simple charms or elaborate centerpieces, depending on her style.
Gemstone and pearl jewelry is the hardest to buy. Although every woman loves precious stones, choosing the best necklace length for her may be difficult. Gemstones are even harder, because they usually look best as a choker-style necklace, and getting that perfect fit can be difficult. If you really want to get her this type of a necklace, choose a long strand of pearls that she can alter for length if she wants.
Keep your choices simple. If you’re unsure of the length, see if the jeweler can order extenders or shorten the chain if needed later on. Most of all have fun. You don’t get to buy too much jewelry that’s this easy to select.
