The Symbolism of the Star of David
Among the wide range of Jewish jewelry available today, perhaps the most common form is the Star of David pendants. The Star of David is a hexagram, made of two intertwined triangles creating a six-pointed star. Over the years, it has become a prime Jewish symbol, perhaps even the symbol most identified with Judaism today.
The Hebrew name of the Star of David – “Magen David” meaning “Shield of David” – refers to the lord, acknowledging the fact that king David, the most famous and greatest military hero of the Jewish people, won his many battles with the help of G-d and not solely by his own might. This is also implied in the blessings recited after the traditional Haftorah reading on the Jewish Sabbath: “Blessed are you God, Shield of David.” The six points of the Star of David represent the six different directions of the earth – north, south, east, west, up and down, all of which are ruled by G-d, the creator of the universe. Throughout their long and harsh exile, the Jewish people have come to the realization that their best hope in this world is to put their trust in the lord’s hands for He rules all, as insinuated by the Star of David.
Also, the triangle in Judaism symbolizes the eternal bond between all three foundations of the Jewish faith – The Torah of Israel, the land of Israel and the people of Israel. It also represents the three sectors within the Jewish people – Cohen, Levi, Israel, and their three famous forefathers – Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
An additional idea regarding this unique shape points to the two intertwined triangles. According to the Kabala, these two triangles symbolize opposite forces in man – good vs. evil, spiritual vs. physical, body vs. soul etc. While one is pointing up to the heavens and the other is pointing down to earth. Some believe they represent the unique infinite bond between the lord and the Jewish people. The good deeds we do, which are represented by the triangle pointing “up”, go up to the heavens causing an abundance of goodness to flow down upon us from the heavens, represented by the triangle pointing “down”.
A more historic pragmatic theory dates back to the first century, to the Bar Kochva rebellion where a new shield technology was developed. This development relied on the strong stability of the triangle shape. Two intertwined triangles in the shape of the Star of David were placed behind the shield, thus forming a strong hexagonal pattern of support.
The Star of David Today
On a national level, the state of Israel has adopted this symbol for many matters such as the flag of Israel which features the Star of David, Israel’s health system which includes ambulances, government hospitals, Magen David Adom and more, and finally different government offices all make use of this popular symbol. In the past years, as this symbol became identified with the Zionist movement, there are some sectors in Judaism who oppose Zionism, thus opposing any use of this symbol whatsoeverl. On a personal level, the Star of David appears on many products. A popular form of Jewish pendants is the Star of David pendants. The symbol can also be found on rings, Judaica gifts, Talit and Teffilin bags, Kippa, Menorahs , Mezuzah cases and much more. It can also be seen decorating Synagogue buildings and Jewish cemeteries across the world.
