Celtic jewelry, as the name suggests, is the representation of Celtic symbols in jewelry. The Celts lived in modern Ireland, Scotland and parts of the Mediterranean. Theirs was a culture suffused with symbolism and intricate art. Therefore, it is only natural that Celtic jewelry bears much of this symbolism and art.
Celtic jewelry is rich in symbolism, which accounts for much of its popularity. Some of the most common symbols found in this tradition include knots, pentacles, Celtic crosses and animals. The symbols are representative in nature and there is a lot of debate regarding what these symbols indicate. For example, interlocking rings or lockets are believed to symbolize eternity.
Although most people are aware of the Claddagh ring and believe that this is the epitome of Celtic jewelry, the fact is, there are different kinds of Celtic jewelry. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces, pins and other pieces of jewelry abound in the Celtic tradition.
The Claddagh rings and the Celtic Cross are two of the most commonly seen pieces of Celtic jewelry. Each of these pieces is rich in meaning, which makes them highly popular with people.
The Claddagh ring is stylish yet simple, which gives it a timeless quality. The two hands holding a heart with a crown over it may be interpreted in countless ways, although the romantic overtone is hard to miss. It is believed that the way the Claddagh ring is worn symbolizes the availability of the individual for a relationship. For instance, if the ring is worn on the left hand, then the wearer is already married. If it is worn on the right hand with the crown pointing towards the base of the finger, it indicates that the wearer is available for a relationship.
The Celtic Cross is a variation of the Christian cross. However, unlike the Christian cross, the Celtic cross is not a symbol of suffering. Instead, it is believed that the four arms of the cross symbolize eternal love and spirituality.
In modern times, there are two kinds of Celtic jewelry available to consumers:

Inexpensive, mass manufactured pieces that carry Celtic symbols

Jewelry manufactured by people who are or were residing in Ireland and Scotland
The former, while beautiful and alluring, may be inexpensive because they are mass produced. The pieces may not be unique. As for the latter, these items are more authentic, less available and highly unique – factors which drive up the cost of the items.
About the Author
Celtic jewelry may be crafted in inexpensive material or they may be crafted in silver, Gold or platinum and inlaid with stones. These pieces of jewelry are different from the rest and are a surefire way of making the wearer stand out from the crowd.
