Cork Flooring’s Natural Color and Shade Variation
Cork flooring is a naturally based product from the cork oak tree. Cork is obtained from the bark of the cork oak tree. There are in inherent color and shade variations and should be expected. Since cork is commercially harvested you can expect that many different trees are harvested at once and used to create cork products; including flooring.
After cork is harvested from the cork oak tree it can take about 6 months to be dried. Prior to product of flooring out of cork material cork stoppers for whine bottles and champagne bottles are punched out. The left over cork material from cork production is then ground up and used to make the flooring product.
Then the cork is compressed and baked in thick 4″ molds; they use many different baking methods in this process depending on the manufacture. Just like a cake you’ll have different layers of the baked cork molds. This is how manufactures get light, medium and dark shaded tiles. The molds are then cut into smaller layers and packed up for shipping to consumers and vendors.
If you’re installing your cork floor yourself you need to make sure you blend the shades during the installation. You should open up all the boxes and mix up the tiles as much as possible to have even shade and color variation. If you have a professional installing your floor you should make sure they also follow this process.
If you’re cork tile floors aren’t dyed with any specific colors nor have any color additions you’ll need to be wary of UV sunlight exposures that can bleach your floor. If the room they are installed in have a lot of sunlight make sure you get window treatments such as blinds or curtains so you can limit exposure when no one is in the room.
