The Ceramic Plate – Why a Popular Collectors Item
Collectors of ceramic plates truly enjoy their hobby. They have good reason to. Ceramic plates are beautiful, somewhat easy to accumulate, often very affordable, and if you have a good eye for a bargain, they very often increase in value. Ceramic Plate collectors are an active breed. Many will go so far as to cross multiple state lines to purchase, or sometimes just inspect, a collection or particular piece they are looking to acquire. It is worth the trip too. Some pieces can be worth a nice chunk of change. Some collectors will pay for a particular piece to be shipped internationally just for an appraisal. While this is the exception to the rule, if you‘re a collector of ceramic plates and a key piece for your collection becomes available, it can be worth the effort. If you have ever attended an estate sale held for someone recently deceased, you might notice that some of the items are those held by that individual most, if not all, of their lives.
Some pieces that can be found at an estate sale can be very valuable and available for pennies on the dollar of their market value to other collectors. However, it is not always the monetary value to many collectors. Those who are into collecting ceramic plates just for the money are usually dealers instead of a collector. There is nothing wrong with dealers in and of themselves. It is a legitimate business like any other. Collectors of ceramic plates usually seem to take an affinity to the artwork of the era. Different phases of world history can often be marked by the popular art styles of the time. Speaking of different phases of human history, some collectors enjoy collecting ceramic plates for their historical significance, as their main motivation. A piece that has ever been used at the White House would certainly be welcome in any home.
Some folks enjoy studying the Victorian era and collect their favorite ceramic plates as a way of holding onto something from the era. The mere thought that folks long gone had used a certain piece for dinnerware in their homes can fill some with awe and wonder about the past. Knowing that someone might share some sort of a connection with the past has a definite romance to it. History just has that appeal. Still, others are just quite taken back by ceramic plates in general. They enjoy the decorative look, feel, and heft of a nice set of ceramic plates. They most certainly are excellent dinnerware due to the durable nature of ceramics themselves.
