Do you think Y!A (more specifically Parenting) is an accurate cross section of modern Western society?
And if not, which groups are we most representative of?
Definitely not. Firstly this section is predominantly American and a lot of the things I read here seem to come from very different views than the rest of the Western world (at least European parents since I’m European myself). In terms of social class, it seems mixed enough but I’d say it’s mainly middle class – upper middle class.
It does give a certain snapshot of American society though.
One example. I’m a socialist. It’s a perfectly usual view over here. In fact socialism is even in the Irish constitution. and my native country France is definitely a socialist country, even when governed by right wing people. So I do express socialist views on health and education issues. Here I sometimes feel that in American English “socialism” is actually an anti-American swear word.
