what brand of ammo should i get?
Ok so i bought me a brand new para-ordinance 1911 in 9mm,bought like 3 boxes of federal fmj’s and wouldn’t you know the @#$ thing jams every 2nd shot,it doesn’t like gold hollow points either, so i buy a box of s&b and it functions perfectly,is there any other brand that works well in that particular pistol?
The gun is fine
The 1911 can be a finicky cat, especially in 9mm. There are a lot of things that can cause a 1911 to jam, including but not limited to:
Magazines – feed lips out of shape, mag setting to high or low in feedway, mag spring tension, bent or canted mag follower. About 60-70% of 1911 problems i have seen personally were mag related.
Extractor – a well tuned and shaped extractor is critical to a 1911 functioning properly. Also look for an extractor that is loose, or turns. If you have ever dropped a round into the chamber, and then dropped the slide on that round, your extractor is probably hosed. 99% of the semi auto pistols out there, this is ok to do, but not the 1911, it must feed from the magazine, period, unless its one of the oddball ones with an external extractor.
Feedramp – Shape, angle, finish, all important for reliable feeding, too many come from the factory out of spec. Be darn careful “polishing” that you dont actually remove any material, just make whats there shiny. I think most Para’s have ramped barrels that are a different animal from standard 1911′s.
Barrel – If not a ramped barrel, check for protrusion of barrel throat into feedway when slide is back and barrel is linked down.
Breechface – Roughness or burrs here will create feed problems as the cartridge head slides up under the extractor during feeding.
Recoil spring – Try a new Wolff Recoil spring in 12-14 lb range if its a full size (5″) 1911.
The 9mm is definitely more difficult to get to feed properly than the .45 ACP.
If after 300 break in rounds it still wont feed, send it back to Para.
