Rosary Bracelets and Vintage Medals Are Understated Items of Catholic Jewelry
Religious Jewelry, especially Catholic religious jewelry, has gained popularity in recent years and that trend appears to be expanding continually in this new millennium as more and more of the faithful wish to display their faith routinely by wearing jewelry that calls attention to their beliefs. The newfound popularity of Catholic jewelry items such as Rosary Bracelets, and vintage medals dedicated to various Catholic Saints are specific examples of this trend.
Vintage medals or even vintage looking medals, represent various saints who inspired this or that personal quality in their daily lives, and wearing the medal inspires this particular Catholic to remember this personal trait or ability in his or her own mind. The medals are worn as inspiration by these often very devout Catholics. This is usually done in order to remind themselves daily of some of the many different characteristics associated with the Saint represented on the medal.
Saint Anthony, for instance, is the patron saint of lost articles, lost people and, many would say, even lost souls. Wearing a St. Anthony medal might represent a person’s hope in finding a person who is lost to them. It might represent a Catholic person’s hope that a lost soul might return to their former belief in God or in Jesus. It could just signify a person’s looking for a lost article or hoping for it’s return.
We specify vintage medals here in particular because the antique look or appearance of a medal inherently reduces the shine and outward appearance of this piece of jewelry and therefore diminishes the likelihood a person will wear such an item to call attention to themselves rather than using the item as inspiration. Similarly, the rosary bracelet’s handiness or instant availability when one wishes to say the rosary, suggests a utilitarian usage rather than a display of beads for their visual appeal or affect as Jewelry.
Jesus was always concerned about the faithful worshiping false gods and might be less enthusiastic about the trend we are describing here than certain popes or saints, but the wearing of a rosary bracelet seems almost an exemplary exercise in recognizing one’s faith because of the pragmatic use of the rosary bracelet as a way of saying the rosary without having a traditional rosary in hand.
There is nothing inherently wrong with wearing a solid gold cross necklace with diamonds depicting Jesus or carrying a flashy ruby, garnet crystal or pearl rosary rather than an understated sandalwood or black onyx rosary bracelet for that matter. The flow of grace associated with each has much more to do with intention rather than outward appearance. So even the most understated rosary bracelet hidden under sackcloth and ashes can not reward the wearer if he never pulls it off his arm and says a devout rosary!
