Instant cross stitch download patterns….a world of choice at your fingertips

While some people may feel a little intimidated by the vastness of the internet, there can be little doubt that for many its existence has been a real boon.

And cross stitchers are just one such group of people enjoying the fruits of the internet as sales of download charts rocket. The immense range of designs available, coupled with the ease of downloading have enticed many to add to their stitching ‘stash’, but if you haven’t yet given it a try yourself, you might like to consider the following:

• Download charts have a greatly reduced carbon footprint, no fuel for delivery and no fancy packaging means a big saving on resources, even accounting for the printer paper and ink used.
• Automated delivery systems mean that you can shop any time, day or night for that special design and have the live link delivered to your inbox as soon as your payment has been processed. This may of course increase the likelihood of impulse purchases, but at least it’s easier to hide these in the inbox where hubby can’t see them.
• Blow them up! Not literally of course but on screen you can zoom in to any section you want, clarifying any little areas of confusion.
• Still confused, no worries! Speak to the designer direct to get clarification. Most designers providing charts online are only too happy to be contacted for advice and support.
• Likewise, buying directly from the designer supports many creative individuals who would never normally be able to bring their ideas and designs to the public.
• Spilt your tea on the chart? Again, no worries! Print that section again. Folding and general wear and tear can render some charts almost incomprehensible over time (and boy do I need a lot of time for some designs) so it’s a major reassurance to know that all is not lost when you can reprint that page again.

Converted yet?  Perhaps so but the task of downloading and printing may still seem daunting to a few, so here are a few tips to ensure the very best results:

• Use a quality, matt coated paper. It only has to be coated one side as you probably wouldn’t want to print your chart on both sides anyway. This will make the symbols stand out clear, crisp and easier on the eye.
• Make sure you select the matt paper type in the ‘printer properties’ section.
• Set your printer to print in ‘Text & Image’ mode. Again, this will improve the quality of the printout.
• Make sure you choose the option to ‘Auto rotate and centre’ which will automatically print landscape or portrait as required.
• Lastly, to save even more money, do you really need to print that cover page with the full colour stitched image? It’s there as a guide and to remind you of what you are stitching, but you can easily view the computer screen every once in a while, after fiddling around on facebook maybe and save yourself enough ink to print another 3 or 4 charts.
