The Righteousness of Christ

Though man was created the highest of all things on earth and with a unique relationship with his Creator, yet he gives this up in pursuit of his own selfish desires to dethrone God and rule over other men.

In the beginning man and woman had intimate fellowship with God, each and every day. They also had dominion over the created order of beasts and were tending the garden.

When sin entered the picture, all was changed. Fellowship with God was broken and man’s relationship with creation was no longer one of ruling – but rather of sweat and toil to partially subdue the environment enough to live.

In sending His Son, the God-man, God made it possible to restore the right relationship between Himself and His creatures. The relationship that had been broken was one of perfect obedience to the will of God. But that had been so broken that man was guilty of death – eternal separation from God. Two things were needed for God to redeem man – righteousness and blood provided together in Christ.

Righteousness is man’s requirement to image God. Deuteronomy 6:25 puts it this way: “And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as He hath commanded us.”

Sin is thereby transgression of the law (I John 3:4). God must be true to His own nature and cannot compromise His demand for a righteous life. Paul carefully spells this out in Chapter 2 of Romans whether Jew or Gentile. God’s justice and holiness demand exact and perfect obedience to His Law – every jot and tittle – for a man to be saved.

Christ perfectly obeyed His Father’s law, reconciling us to God by His righteousness. His blood paid for our sins and His life of obedience He presented to God is as if we had perfectly kept the law. What we could never do, God did for us. Not only dying for us, but also living for us.

Listen to the prophecy of Isaiah as he speaks of Christ in 11:2-5 – “…And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord; and shall make Him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and He shall not judge after the sight of His eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of His ears; but with righteousness shall He judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and He shall smite the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips shall He slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of His loins, and faithfulness the girdle of His reins.”

Many Old Testament prophecies concerning the Coming One stress His righteousness. In Jeremiah 23:5. The promise is made that God will raise unto David a righteous Branch – the Righteous branch out of the stem of Jesse.

He is portrayed as the suffering servant. His life was without guile, violence, rebelliousness, selfishness – a life lived by the power of the Holy Spirit, in humility, patience, trust, perfect submission to God’s will, zeal for God’s glory, and unwavering courage to go even unto the death of the cross to finish the task God had given Him to do.

As the Old Testament recorded Israel as God’s servant nation that continually broke God’s laws, so in contrast we see in the New Testament Jesus Christ portrayed as God’s Righteous Servant who does not break the Covenant.

In order to “fulfill all righteousness” Jesus came to John to be baptized. At that time a voice from heaven declared “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17.)

As Israel was called out of Egypt and tested in the wilderness, so Christ also is called out of Egypt (Matthew 2:15) and tested in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11).

Jesus went about doing good, even as Isaiah had prophesied – the righteous servant of God.

Even those who were not His followers were forced to admit this quality in Jesus. At Christ’s death, the centurion cried out “Certainly this was a righteous man.” (Luke 23:47); the dying thief admits “this man hath done nothing amiss” (23:41). Even the demons who opposed Him were forced to confess, “I know Thee, who Thou art; the Holy One of God.” (4:34).

At the most trying moment of His life, Jesus speaks “not My will, but Thine be done.” (22:42.)

With finality He can say, “I have glorified Thee on the earth: I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do.” (John 17:4.)

Christ’s life of obedience to the perfect will of God is the righteousness of Christ.

This is the way Paul puts it (Philippians 2:5-9):

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus; who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him which is above every name.”

You may be saying to yourself – that may all be very interesting in its place – but what has that got to do with me?

Stick with me and I hope to show you that whether Christian or not, it has everything to do with you!

First of all, Jesus did not do all of this for Himself. As God, He was the Lawgiver and owed no obedience to the Law. He fulfilled all righteousness for us. He took on our obligation, by His own choice, that in our place He could do for us what we could never do for ourselves. He needed no such righteousness for Himself, for from eternity He was the Righteous One.

Second, Christ’s Righteousness is of infinite value. Even if a man could live a sinless life – he would thereby save only himself. Only by the Grace of God were righteous men such as Noah, Job, and Daniel saved. Who Christ is gave value to what He did. He was a divine and infinite Person, filled with “all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” (Colossians 2:9.) His obedience was so full of glory, being observed by all the universe, that it merited all honor and blessedness for eternity (Philippians 2:9,10; Psalms 24).

By nature we have no desire to obey our parents when we’re young – nor anyone else when we are older. In order for Christ to give this life of infinite righteousness to us (which would give us the right to eternal blessedness and glory), He had to lay it down – bequeathing it to us in the New Testament of His Blood.

In the Garden, after Adam and Eve had sinned God covered them with skins of animals. The life of the animal produced the skin – but that life had to be sacrificed for them.

Paul wonderfully sums this up on Romans 5:10 – “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.”

This righteousness is of God, for it came by His grace. It is the righteousness of Christ Jesus, for He lived it. It is the righteousness of faith, for the Holy Spirit creates faith in it.

This righteousness which justifies and saves the believing sinner unto life eternal always is with and in the Person of Christ.

These are the benefits to us – Christ’s blood washes away the stain of all guilt, His righteousness clothes the believer with the righteous life of obedience which the law demands.

Justification is not clearing away the past of sin so that we can go from there to provide our own life of works for God’s acceptance.

We must see that our old life has been buried with Christ, so our new life is now in Christ at God’s right hand (see Colossians 3:1-4).

This is the Christian’s true treasure – and where his treasure is, there is his heart also.

God calls upon us as Christians to live a life of faith in what Jesus has already done for us – not a life of perfect obedience. No man could live up to that burden in all of earth’s history, save God’s Holy One.

All those who have earnestly sought to live that perfect life, if honest, will say that they have failed, and even at their best, sin creeps in as the secret sin of pride. Watch out for the one who claims sinlessness and is proud of it. While our knowing God’s law points us continually as our only way to meet its claims to Jesus Christ, yet what Christ did points us back to the law as the expression of Christian duty.

Our gratitude for what Christ has done for us leads us to seek ways to please Him. We would not seek to dishonor and bring shame to the Name of Jesus. God indeed wishes us to become like His Son, and has given to each believer the Holy Spirit, who through His Word will truly bring us up into mature Christians.

We are to seek godliness in our lives. When Paul gives advice about this, he uses the language of athletes. He knows that our old lives are full of habits of sinning – that our whole orientation has been toward ourselves. He promises no instant holiness but speaks of striving, running after the goal, of practicing those things that are right. Anyone who has ever excelled in any sport could tell you that he or she doesn’t just go to games and perform perfectly – but hours and hours of practice each day bring the right habits and skills we see.

So Paul advises us – not only to put off the old man – or old habits (of thinking as well as acting) – but to put on the new man – or new habits of acting and thinking – to practice, be patient and don’t’ give up. Just as the trained athlete finally performs perfectly without thinking – his actions and reactions have become automatic – so ours as Christians will finally become. Every little mistake or failure should not discourage us.

And the most blessed thing is that we don’t have to do it alone. “It is God who works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13.)

The plainest path to this kind of life is in prayerful study and obedience to the Word of God. Indeed God has given us the Holy Spirit to give us the power and help to live according to His Word.

The Scriptures teach us what God requires, they convict us of sin, by showing us where we fall short, and they set us up straight again. This continual process trains us in righteous living.

Thus in really knowing how God wants us to live, we are given the freedom to really live – to give to others, to love others, to practice being like Christ, knowing that we will fail now and again but that we are also forgiven every time.

It is only the piano player who has practiced and follows all the rules of music that can sit down and play beautiful music. One who talks about not wanting to be bound by any rules and all that in the name of freedom sits down at the piano and makes a lot of unnerving noise.

So it is with our lives, it is only as we practice the rules of God do our lives begin to sing and make joyful music unto the Lord. He is with us always. He wishes us to become more and more like His Son, Jesus.

Thank God for the Righteousness He has provided for us in Christ – for we could never produce it in ourselves – now let us bring honor to Him by faithfully practicing being like Him out of love and gratitude.

“14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.”

Prayer: Lord, as Christians we thank you for all these things you have done for us in Christ – continue to give us help in being faithful to such a great salvation.

If there be one here who has not accepted this gift of the righteousness and death of Jesus Christ – but who is trying to work out their own righteousness, Lord show them yourself – that they might know that they can never attain what you did for them. I urge everyone to trust only in Jesus Christ, for only in Him do we have life. Amen.
