Question about cross necklaces?

I want a sterling silver cross necklace for my birthday. I have one picked out and everything…. I just have one problem. A lot of advertisements I saw boasted that these were a beautiful and classy way to show your Christianity. But then I saw a Catholic website selling them. Are crosses used to show your love for God and Jesus restricted to one religion? I have not chosen my religion yet, but my mother is Catholic and I don’t want to hurt her feelings by asking for a Christian pendant. Any help would be… well, helpful. Thank you.
