Best place to see the aurora borealis w/out going deep into the arctic?
i wanna know where the best place to see the aurora borealis is. i live in new england, and i’d be willing to go to alaska or canada to see it. i heard its beautiful and is a must see before you die. but i dont wanna have to go deep into northern canada or in the arctic to the point where im freezing my a** off. any cities or towns in the u.s or canada where i can the northern lights>
You don’t have to go to the Arctic. Whether or not you’ll freeze your ass off is a matter of your metabolism. You can see them just fine from the vicinity of Edmonton (~6 hrs from the Montana-Alberta border and not even CLOSE to Arctic), for instance, though best viewing opportunities are in winter where temps will occasionally drop to -40C. Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Prince George, Quebec City, and St. John’s can also have decent shows of them… but bear in mind that city lights have a way of blotting them out, so you’ll want to get outside any of these centres.
And of course, the closer to the solar maximum, the more likely you are to see them further south.
That said, if you get up into the REAL arctic, during the winter, you get nights where you feel like they’re all around you, and the intensity is unmatched.
